High Noon Gallery
High Noon presents Vessels, a solo show of Daina Mattis’s work. Continuing in the vein of her early work, Mattis turns an eye onto themes of emptiness and fakery. Her paintings draw attention to the physical flimsiness of the canvas by juxtaposing unprimed linen with trompe l’oeil marble. Her images often include fabric swatches, designer logos, or references to other markers of surface over substance. Mattis’s often wry approach to her work– including, for example, a trompe l’oeil sprinkler on a trompe l’oeil sky painted ceiling– only deepens her critique of shallowness.
