Empirical Nonsense

Empirical Nonsense presents Keep Everything Under Your Hat, a solo exhibition by Erika Keck. As a painter, Keck uses paint in sometimes unrecognizable ways, focusing on its tactility and dimensionality. The result in Keep Everything Under Your Hat is a series of quasi-sculptural reliefs in which Keck has woven or knitted strips of dried paint to create loose surfaces of wild colors that stand in for the canvas itself.

In conjunction, Empirical Nonsense will present The Bubble Blower, a rare occasion in which to view Carol Cole’s work across time, with a focus on her iconic Bubble Blower series. Using the shape of the female breast as a symbol of nurture and vulnerability, Cole celebrates what it is to be human. To see Cole's work gathered together is to understand her career as one dedicated to unearthing our shared need for generosity and care.

And, finally,

Empirical Nonsense presents a program of short films by artists Maureen Catbagan, Eliane Lima, Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle. Whether it be Catbagan’s exploration of queer desire ignited by the catalyst of fruit, Lima’s account of the life of Robert and his alter-ego Sherry or Stephens and Sprinkle’s collaboration in ecosex performance art, this grouping of short films represents a sliver of the work being done by women in film today.
